In this first part of a special two-part episode on freedom from pornography, Pastor Creflo Dollar explains how porn images can never compare to real intimacy and God’s plan for their lives. Then, he will reveal real answers that will enable this couple and anyone to break the negative habit and walk free from its grip.
How does a person become hooked on pornography and what role does fear play in that process? In order to understand this better, we must first look at the heart of mankind and how a person’s carnal desires, which are based in selfishness, are what the enemy uses to draw him or her addictive behavior. Jeremiah 17:9 says something very interesting, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” When he talks about the “heart” here, he is referring to our unrenewed spirit, which is ruled by carnality, along with the unrenewed mind, also known as the “flesh.” Before we were born again, we possessed this unrenewed spirit. As a result, we were subject to the lusts and appetites that were a part of our carnal nature. However, when we made Jesus the Lord of our lives, our spirits were recreated and reconnected to the life of God, making us free from sin.
Although our spirits are recreated, our minds are not. All the fearful, selfish desires that were inherent to our carnal nature must be continually put to death as an act of our will. We do this by making a conscious decision to choose God’s way instead of our old ways. By meditating and acting on the Scriptures consistently, we are able to “walk in the Spirit” and keep ourselves from fulfilling the lusts of our flesh.
With that being said, loneliness, fear, and emptiness are all part of the curse of negative emotions that came upon mankind when Adam and Eve disobeyed God. As a result, there is a natural tendency to go in the direction of these emotions when we go through hard times. The enemy constantly magnifies these feelings through failed relationships, unmet needs, and negative encounters with those who hurt us. When we don’t use the Word to come against these things, we will be open and susceptible to the suggestions and temptations of the devil, pornography being one of them. Anything that seems to provide a temporary way of escape from emotional pain is designed to trap us. We must be sure that we have a relationship with Jesus Christ and that we also initiate and continue the process of renewing our minds.
Staying focused on the Word of God is going to be the key to dealing with the worldly enticements that bombard our senses every day. We will always be presented with opportunities to become self-centered rather than God-centered. If we don’t turn to the Word to deal with distress, we will find other ways to do it.
Stay God-centered and He will empower you to walk in true intimacy and freedom that can only come by His grace flowing through your life!
